There are a number of good reasons to access email counselling services and these include.
Time Factors
With email counselling there is no need to make appointments, travel to appointments etc. No necessary interruptions to daily life. It can all be done in your own time.
Geographical Factors
Where therapists are unavailable in your area or waiting lists are too long, you can access email counselling support when you need it.
Sensitive Issues
You may be more comfortable in discussing some issues in writing than face to face.
Reviewable
Email counselling sessions are able to be reviewed at your leisure. You can take time to reflect on suggestions and exercises given.
Getting the feel
If you are unfamiliar with the counselling process and want to find out what it could be like. Email counselling might be a useful first step.
Please be aware that there are some circumstances where email counselling will not be appropriate for you.
Ambiguity
The written word, sometimes more so than the verbal is open to much interpretation and ambiguity. We are generally leaving out the auditory and visual cues that add meaning to a verbal exchange. If you have found yourself feeling very sensitive about written information then you might want to consider this before embarking on email counselling. Despite this, my best efforts are put into being as direct and open as possible.
Patience
If you are uncomfortable with the idea of having to wait for a reply up to 48 hours, you will either learn patience or email counselling may be unsuitable for you.
Mental Illness
Where a mental illness is diagnosed, any counselling and support you access should be done with full knowledge and approval of your doctor or primary practitioner. Usually, email counselling will not be suitable in these cases.
